Book Review: Navapashanam by Nitya Neelakantan

Wow! It has been a while to my 5 star and I’m so happy it’s one of my favourite authors Nitya’s Navapashanam, an Indian historical fiction that has it’s roots based in ancient Tamil history with bits of sorcery and magic. Navapashanam oscillates between 1798 and 2018 where two women live separate lives but are bound my one tale, one secret of the family. Mookambikai was a fierce lady based in a small village of Tamil Nadu who held strong healing powers through a secret that was known only to her and her family but also had an eye of many especially the healers of nearby villages who couldn’t understand how she could cure the incurable. On the other hand in 2018 Megha is visiting India from United Kingdom to her ancestral home called the Mangalam mansion. As she settles in the mansion, she is besotted but at the same time can’t wait to be back to UK until she is given a surprise by her parents that she is ecstatic about. Along with the surprise, there comes another surprise that shocks her parents and the entire family that starts looking like more than just a short visit to the ancestral home. As the story progresses in 1798 and 2018 shocking incidents rattle both the women’s lives until Megha finds a trail to the past and the ancient concept of the healers that will change Megha’s life forever. Why? How? For that ,read the book.

Nitya’s writing is so descriptive and to the point that it doesn’t distract you even if you have loud music playing in the background. There is so much detailing in the ancient history research, words that actually might not exist in today’s time in Tamil but she has found the older script and presented it in the narrative which makes you want more from the book.

Apart from the story building, the author has made sure that despite the gender of both the protagonists being female there is no dearth of action, adventure in both the timelines which keeps you entertained till the end.

There is a 2 centuries difference between the two female protagonists and yet they are so prominent in the way they live and the way people’s routine or traditions go by and yet there are similarities that are unearthed in the quest for the necklace, the fight Mookambikai faced in her life.

This book can be read by everyone even if you are not aware of the cultures or the tamil language as the index is provided by the author making it much easier and also providing us to learn something new through the story.

PICK.UP.THIS.BOOK.

Everything aside, people nowadays want to read good Indian authors. Well, here’s one who is good and Indian. The USP of this book remains the Indian historical fiction that the author introduces us to about which not much has been written about.

The book is also available on Kindle. Share your thoughts when you complete the book.
